Not when one has a monopoly on a skill set. I'm envious of people who do not provide a service with their skill set. I believe that is the next logical stage beyond the two that are indirectly mentioned here.

consulting?

I'm sure this is meant as a jab, but I'm pretty sure no one here has a monopoly on any skill set. They probably wouldn't be on here if they did.

Actually I have no idea what the fuck you are trying to say.

Consulting is a service.

You have assumed several "jabs" over the years. I stopped wasting my energy on negative vague comments some time ago.

Regardless of perceived intent, doesn't the comment seem logical?
I've been at the stage you are, the stage Sam is at (slightly different because I had no boss), and now back at your stage. One is better than the other but neither is where I want to be.

Do I like having a boss? No.
Do I like providing a service for the public? No.
Would I like to work when I want, not have to please other people, and work where I want? Yes.

That's the difference between working for a large corporation like McAfee and a small company. Runt, if you all are working on a last minute build for a returning customer is FP going to be fine with an employee just saying, ehhhh fuck you guys I have pto?

It depends on the situation if the work was laid out prior to the employees PTO and clearly set then they would be expected to do their job.

If it was dropped on them the day before they leave for PTO then no, the customer will have to understand orthe work load would have to be displaced.

i'm sure FP sets their lead time accordingly with some wiggle room and if a customer says "fuck your lead time i want this done today" they probably do tell them to fuck off but you probably have more competition than FP does to be fair. i think that goes back to what ligo said. if you're better than everyone else you make the rules.

There are plenty of people who can take whatever PTO they want, in our company. We just aren't those people, and yeah we can get different jobs, people just like to publicly bitch. Im not much interested in moving jobs now, id have to go to super corporate cube world to get the same income, and that sounds horrible. The PTO thing sucks a big dick, but the fact of the matter is, I have 23 days because I never take the shit in the first place, so I really shouldn't care.

That's also a good way to lose potential business by trying to show off who has the bigger dick.

Yeah, no.

First, we were already under contract.
Second, I was the person requested for every project this customer had (which ultimately led to my burnout and resignation, but that's another story)
And finally, it wasn't posturing. I genuinely would have quit that job over being told that I _HAD_ to work the time that I had scheduled off. And everyone in the room knew that, which is why the PM got in front of me.

So, yeah. Principles and all that.

We are a small and flexible company no time needed is really ever denied but everyone here that's essential to the ongoing profitability of the company handles their shit. I'm sure if we had people who we rely on to get shit done that constantly asked for PTO or dropped the proverbial ball we would have to institute some sort of policy.

The reason the policy was put in place, from what has been "rumored", is due to an ex employee. He built up a large amount of pto by documenting every little time he worked outside of normal hours. Thus when he was let go they had to pay out that amount of time. He made a substantial income thus it put a dent in the company I'm sure. The people this policy is hurting the most are the highest waged employees.

Of course. Some people are more easily replaced than others though. That's why sometimes when a person quits, the company begs them to be available on retainer at twice their FTE rate until they find a replacement.

Except management. Of course.

That's usually how policies are born. Some asshat does something that no one ever conceived of a person doing, so now there has to be a policy about it.

Kudos to your company for paying the guy's accrued PTO though. Most places would have just told him to pound sand. That happened to my wife when she left that place that had her contracted out to NetApp. Jerks.

I watched this documentary called black fish. It further fueled my dislike for the human race. A person is generally good but a mass of people is generally bad. Lying, selfishness, and displacing blame is standard procedure in large companies.

This morning I get a work order with zero labor hours and I ask about it. I get a speech about I'm ungrateful for the privilege of working for a multi billion dollar company.

I also have used all my pto this year but can't get paid for it until the end of the year. This is me relating to the topic.

I'm surviving just fine but questioning why I fear the unknown more than being unhappy with my professional life.

I would've handed the ticket back and walked away without a word.  Maybe "fix it" as my instructions to them as I walked away or something.

So you get handed a WO without labor hours attached to it, when you question it you're basically told you're an ungrateful bastard?

How can you claim time against a WO that has no billable labor?
