I thought I'd offer some of my services here, not to make money but to help some of you out with your computer needs. I have done this for free in the past but I would appreciate donations so I don't feel bad spending all my money on toys for myself. I don't need the money so I have priced my services VERY, VERY cheap as I do it mostly for the fun of it. Hourly rate on this work would not be worth it to me if money was my motivation. I'll also give 10% back to DI to support the site.

Build and test a computer: $20 (you provide parts)
Install OS, optimize and secure it: $20
Install wireless network: $10
Problem diagnostic and correction: $20 + parts

If you want me to shop for parts to find the best available at the cheapest prices, build the computer and completely set it up optimized and with Virus and spyware protection, I can do that too. I can not offer warranty on it other than what you get with the parts but if they do break within a year I will fix it for free (but you deal with getting a replacement part on warranty). If you want me to purchase parts I would need a deposit to secure that you will get the computer, or if you decide not to I can still get my money back by selling it cheaper to someone else.

Setup a Linux-server from an older computer you don't use anymore (basic with webserver): $20
Additional services negotiable

If you didn't see something on the list then ask. E-mail me at sami_mikael@yahoo.com and tell me who you are on DI.

I could take a look at it but with laptops getting replacement parts might be a problem. Laptops are much harder to work on than standard PC's that use interchangeable components so I can't quarantee anything. Is the display hardware messed up or could it be a software issue? Loading up could be either.

When I say I will look it up it means that there is no charge if I can't fix it. Applies to all the services.

Also forgot to mention if you have hardware to fix I would need them to be dropped off either in Keller or Irving.

We just installed a new router but it isn't cooperating with our modem.

After it's installed, it's telling us that our DNS server IP is 192.168.1.1, which is impossible. This should be the IP from our ISP (SBC), right?

Do you mind me PMing you or talking to you on AIM about this? I really need to get this new router to work, my current one keeps crashing on me every few hours and I'm afraid it's about to just take a shit and die on me.

Same here. He put together quite a nice system for me, and it still works just like it did almost a year ago. If he wasn't 1400 miles from me, he'd be building my new one too.

FEDEX will deliver... smile.gif

Looks like I'll have more time for this in the near future, just got laid off yesterday and my last day at the company is April 2nd. The good thing is that I'm financially secured until the end of the year if not longer, thanks to a good package due to my 9.5 years with them. I think I'll take off a few months and travel a little before finding something new to do. smile.gif

this is a pretty easy task i think but one of my cd trays got pulled out of the drive about a year ago and nothing appears broken but you can't just stick it back in for some reason. i keep putting it off but this spring break (march 14th) would probably be a good time for me to get this fixed. is this something you could easily do for a cheap price?

I would need you to purchase the RAM. If you need help, I can provide some links to compatible memory. Once you have it, I can install it.

At this point I only take dropoffs, and all in Keller area. I also spend part of my weeks in Arlington so one can schedule a dropoff there as well.

I don't mind at all. I will be extremely busy and I never really did it for the money. As long as you keep your rates cheap and do it to help people, not for the money then all the help is good. Also it will give people someone in the east of metroplex a place to drop off their computers.

I can still take an occasional computer or two if they are dropped off in Keller, and I will (help in) build(ing) new computers from scratch if someone needs one.

cool Welles. I have wondered before whether the celestials considered the human mind a computer or not. And it seems that they do. I wonder if they also consider morontia mind, and other higher types of mind, computers? Dylan.
